What’s on the Third Weekend of August Every Year on Mt Hood?

Winter at Timberline LodgeIt is the starting line for the Hood to Coast Relay that began in 1982.  The Startline for the relay is at the Historic Timberline lodge which lays on the south side of Mt Hood at an elevation of 5,960 Feet within the beautiful Mt Hood National Forest just 15 Minutes from Government Camp.

Timberline is a popular tourist destination attracting more than a million visitors a year for winter and summer skiing and snowboarding. The Pacific Crest Trail also goes right by the Lodge. I remember Thursday was ski nighRace Start for Hood to Coastt for the Welches Grade School kids and I have many fond memories of  those ski nights on the mountain.

Tomorrow, bright and early, the relay starts. There 1,050 teams of 12 runners each that will start the relay at the Lodge, then wind Seaside Oregon-Hood to Coast Finish Line Celebrationthrough Portland, Oregon and the Oregon Coast Range to end up in Seaside along the Oregon coast for the finish. 12,600 runners & 3600 volunteers will make their way to the Finish Line.

Waves of runners start at 6:30 AM Friday morning and will make there way down the mountain all day tomorrow and tomorrow night. Starting at 10 AM they will be running by the Merit Properties Office in Welches, Oregon. All of the Restaurants , grocery stores, Coffee Houses and Food Carts will be packed!  I remember in 1985 when the Relay was a few years old and they made their way on the back roads to the coast. Pretty Treacherous route.  A number of years ago, I participated in the Portland to Coast Walk.  Now, Hood to Coast  is one of Oregon’s big events where teams come from all over the country and make their way to Mt Hood to participate.

Good Luck to the runners and walkers and Drive Safely tomorrow on the Mountain!
